Sugaring has been gaining popularity as a hair removal method, but what the heck is it? Is it better than traditional waxing? Why does MKP offer both waxing and sugaring? In this post, we hope to answer those questions and more!

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring is an ancient form of hair removal that dates back to the Persian Empire in 1900 BC! It has been regaining popularity in recent years, throughout the hair removal industry, as a more natural alternative to traditional waxing products. Though Sugaring is not the best option for everyone, it can have a lot of benefits for clients who don’t respond well to traditional waxing.

The SugarLoveTM Sugar Paste that we use is made up of only cane sugar, molasses, lemon juice, and purified water, with no added preservatives or other chemicals! This makes it a great option for clients who are irritated by some of the ingredients commonly found in traditional waxing products. However, the lemon juice in sugar products can be irritating to some clients as well.

Thanks to the natural anti-microbial properties of sugar (i.e. bacteria can not grow in a high sugar

environment,) the same paste ball can be used throughout a service. This makes Sugaring

The Sugaring method uses the sugar paste at room temperature, unlike traditional wax products which need to be heated. This makes Sugaring a hair removal
option for clients with heat the least wasteful form of hair removal that we offer. Other methods require the use of multiple applicator sticks and/or removal strips.

sensitivities!

Sugaring is also a good option for clients who are prone to hair breakage. Hair breakage happens when instead of being fully removed from the root, a hair snaps during the waxing process. Breakage can lead to a higher rate of ingrown hairs, blemishing, leftover stubble at the time of service, and the hair to appear to grow back at a faster rate. The hair isn’t actually growing back any faster, it just doesn’t have as far to grow as hairs that were successfully removed from the root. Sugaring is able to reduce hair breakage because it allows your Wax Artist to remove the hair in the same direction it grows! All other waxing methods remove hair against the direction of hair growth, which puts more stress on the hair and increases the likelihood of breakage.

Lastly, Sugaring can be a gentler option for clients with more sensitive skin types. This is because, unlike traditional wax, sugar does not stick to live skin cells. It wraps around the hair shaft, as the sugar warms to your body temperature, and seeps into the hair follicle. This allows it to remove the hair while only sticking to hairs and dead skin cells. If clients have had issues with skin lifting or bruising in the past, Sugaring may be a better option to better maintain their skin’s integrity.

Is Sugaring Better than Waxing?

The short answer to that question is, maybe? I know that sounds like a non-answer, but it’s the truth! Just like other hair removal techniques, Sugaring is awesome for some clients and not so awesome for others. That’s why we offer multiple options for hair removal!

Though sugar is an all natural product, whereas traditional wax is not, it can still cause irritation for certain clients. It is not uncommon to be allergic to lemon when it is applied to

the skin. Most of us haven’t rubbed lemons directly onto our bodies before, so most clients are not aware they have this allergic response beforehand. This reaction can be easily cleared up with an over the counter anti-histamine medication, but of course, being in that situation after every wax service is not ideal!

Sugaring also has a different feel to traditional waxing, that can take some getting used to. For the majority of our clients who get better results from Sugaring, the experience is worth the outcome! However, most of our clients who do not experience issues with traditional waxing prefer it over Sugaring.
